Essential Agreements

The following are our Essential Agreements as discussed at the SLP Pre-K Back to School Workshop on Thursday, August 27.

We will all adopt an Inquiry stance.
We will communicate back to families about the work we do in our classrooms.
We will work to raise achievement for all students.
We will work to eliminate the predictability of who will do well and who will not.
We will document the children’s progress and our process in supporting that progress.
We will engage in staff development opportunities.
We will provide data and documentation that supports what we are doing is making a difference in student achievement.

At the workshop, we also spent some time discussing the difference between compliance and committment. I am looking for everyone to make a commitment to honoring these essential agreements. Please post a comment to that effect on this blog no later than Friday, September 11.

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the children and families in St. Louis Park.

Chad, Sarah, and I have printed off a copy of our agreement and we are going to post it in our parent area. We hope this will help the parents know what we are working towards, and help keep us on target since we know parents will be watching. We think the more parents are included and made aware of things, the more accountable we will need to be, and the more likely they will be to participate. Seeing our commitments posted will also be a good daily reminder for us.

I like the idea of commitment vs. compliance. It is so easy to be led along passively. But commitment, to me, means that you take the initiative to do more and also that you never stop doing more. It is one of the things that I love and hate most about teaching - there is always more I could be doing!

Beth you must have read my mind, I too am going to post a copy of the agreement on our Family Communication Board and also post one on the desk in "teacher town", to remind us daily of our essential agreements commitment.
I'm liiking forward to a year of discovery & learning.

I support the Essential agreements and will make sure we also post a copy in our Parent Ed room, along with supporting the Children's staff in their work.

I commit to essential agreements and I also think that posting them in the room would be a great reminder of what we agreed to.

I look forward to sharing the EA with parents and hope that it will foster discussion about our role in their children's lives. I hope, too, that we can discuss how we might apply some parts of the EA in parent education.

I will be posting the agreement in my work area. This year, I plan to continue journaling what the toddlers do each day. I've placed last year's notebooks in a three-ring binder. I am planning to provide the parents with a weekly newsletter and keep copies in a binder for documentation, along with my journaling. In addition, I am going to attend the Inquire meetings. I will also continue to support each child in their exploration and development. We will also display our work in the hall and later mount it in the room for the children to come back to their previous work and photos of themselves.
