The Rec Area

In the Welcome Back letter, I mentioned that a schedule would be set to rotate activities in the Rec Area. Early Childhood Special Education has agreed to take the first month (October)--thank you very much!

Today Jodi suggested a conversation about discussing expectations for those rotated activities. That sounds like a great idea. Rather than trying to set up a time when everyone can meet face to face, could we try using the comment section on this post to "discuss" expectations?

Please make your initial comment no later than Friday, Oct. 3. Remember you can--and should--comment to others' comments so return to this post often over the next two weeks. Conversation will finish on Friday, October 10. I will then post the shared expectations and schedule after that.

Thank you for making this work for everyone!

Hello, I love the REC area and it's current climbers and physical elements. The activity room is very open, but, could we also add to the REC area a space for large cars, trucks, strollers to push and pull? Could we change it out to have large blocks to build with?
Could we make an obstacle course?

Yea! I got this to work finally after what.... a year. I think it would be fun to have balls or beanbags in the REC area, a CD player as well. Or how about a book with different group games to play.

Our kids don't spend very much time in the Rec Area, so when we do go there they are pretty much climbing on the equipment. We sometimes bring a little toy from the room for a hide-and-seek game that the kids love to play. The kids playing the game go out in the hallway while one child hides the small toy somewhere around the room or on the climbers. The players enter the room and try to find the toy. After awhile the hide-er gives hints to the hiding location. Just a fun simple game that we save for our Rec Area time. Marlys used to keep a doll house and Barbies and dinosaurs in that closet and we would take those toys out once in awhile. It was nice to have some big toys like that and have the room for the kids to really move around and let the dolls/dinos explore the room.

Hi! We in the Kid's Place Toddler Room use the Rec Area only during inclement weather-- and sometimes that can be often, sometimes not. I like the ideas of large cars, trucks, and strollers to push and pull, as well as balls, beanbags, and a CD player. The toddlers also love to play "follow the leader" type games-- sometimes all they need to get them to join in is a teacher starting to march around the room, clapping hands-- and then they all line up behind and we have a clapping parade! Maybe some simple rhythm instruments could support that! I think any of the supplemental equipment would be great to have down there all the time-- we often bring our bags of little and big balls to use there but bring them back up with us, knowing that the storage room doesn't lock, so anything in there may grow feet and walk away. If we could get a lock on the door that could be opened by our regular room keys, then it could be available to all the children in our programs, with everybody's understanding that the materials should be treated well and put back away when a group is done with them. Maybe there could also be some kind of system to replace items that accidently get broken or lost-- maybe a usage list on the wall with a place to indicate when an item needs to be replaced?? I especially like the CD player idea because we have lots of fun action songs and dancing music that really get the toddlers to boogie down!

Hi,
We are very fortunate to have a room to use when Mother Nature doesn't cooperate. The children really enjoy the REC area and the different climbers. It would be nice to purchase different large motor pieces to be stored in a locked area to use when desired.
