It is most humbling to be soundly defeated but very rewarding to be soundly defeated by an extremely bright, extraordinarily exhuberant--not to mention really, really smart--group of preschoolers.
One of the hallmarks of Reggio Emilia is the creation of community, involving others in the acquisition and sharing of knowledge. Aren't there many opportunities you see in your classrooms to help create this kind of community?
So here's your provocation for Valentine's Day week:
what are your children interested in knowing more about in your building and who would you include in that learning?
OR
who from your building community--or the greater SLP community--might you invite into your classroom to provide your children a chance to teach what they've learned?

If you haven't had a chance to read the comments to the last post about the cubbies, give yourself a Valentine's Day present and do it right now!

Mary-Thanks so much for coming to our challenge! The moms and dads vs.kids was a huge success! There were 13 adults! I have to admit I was disappointed with our first challenge (we invited various school district leaders, a school board member, and the mayor). If you, Lisa, and Marsha hadn't showed up we wouldn't have had anyone! My first response was "I'm never going to invite them again!", but the more I think about it, the more I realize that this was probably the first time they had ever been invited to a preschool event! I will keep inviting everyone I can until they all come and see what fantastic, smart, wonderful children we have at Kids' Place!
We enjoy being a part of the JH community at our site. We have some neat interactions with the JH kids. They'll come into our room and read to us or do a special project. We also get invited to participate in activities around the school like the Talent Show. It makes my kids feel like they belong. It's also fun when former preschoolers come in to visit and we drag out the photo album and check out what they looked like 8 years ago. It gets the current kiddos exciited to come back. This is a great building!
Creative Play had a very cute happening:A parent brought in a valentine book about the valentine potatoe. Judy read the story to the class and then they headed off to the gym for their recreation time. The parent came to the classroom with a decorated box with potatoe chips in it and hung it on the classroom door. The children were so excited to see that the majic valentine potatoe had come to their class on Valentine's day..just like the story!
In my ECFE classes, I have used the camera to take photos of the members. I then took the disk to the local CVS near my home and made class photos for each parent . Each photo had nine photos of the members or action shots. I know in 14 weeks the changes in these children will be incredible as they are 2 month -23 months old. The parents were delighted to have a class photo..Some wnated a teacher photo in the composite. I'll have to think about that. Peggy
