Sensory Table Event with Tom Bedard
OCTOBER 27 – SAND, WATER AND SENSORY TABLES
Time: 9 AM to Noon
Tom Bedard, who does amazing work with young children, writes, “Early childhood education has been my life for over 30 years. I have taught all age groups from infants to 5-year-olds. I was a director for five years in the 1980s, but I returned to the classroom 22 years ago.” Check out Tom’s blog: http://tomsensori.blogspot.com/ and join him on Saturday, October 27th.
The morning’s program will be an exploration of play possibilities at the sensory table using a framework of dimensions and elements. Participants will be working with three different variations: a horizontal set up, a vertical set up and one on an incline. Tom offers, “We will explore the types of operations that may be common to all the set ups and those that are unique to each set up. There are several questions we can consider. How do we interact or “dialogue” with the different orientations created by the different set ups? Also, what are the spaces created by each of the set ups and what invitations do they encourage high, low, and in between? What are the forms, energies and rhythms of each set up? How do these set ups help us understand space? Hopefully we can reflect on what that means for children exploring spaces. Do they do it differently? If so, how? What kind of operations do they come up with to make meaning from their explorations? How do they view space?”
